andrew zimmern’s bizarre foods –like, don’t like, or indifferent?

July 21, 2009

I just don’t know what to make of Andrew Zimmern’s Bizarre Foods (Travel Channel).

On one hand the penis eating champ showcases lesser known cultures and cuisines –both pluses in my book.  What’s more, an equal amount of time is dedicated to all sects and classes –you just don’t see that all too often.  Additionally the cast iron stomach, for the most part, maintains a culturally relative lens to all he approaches -of course a good thing in our ever increasing ethnocentric American society.  And that right there, of course, is the premise of the show:  scare and cause discomfort to 15 mile radius trapped folk who just don’t know nor understand how the rest of the world lives and operates.  Borat, anyone?

Hello. My Name-a Borat.

Hello. My Name-a Borat.

On the other hand, however, is a portly, uber hokey, touristy American doing little to quash American stereotypes.  While always respectful, his choice of clothing (bright short shorts!?), bottomless pit eat-a-thon demeanor, and fanny-pack wearing mannerisms do us few favors.  In fact, watch carefully and you’ll see many of his hosts lose patience, roll their eyes, etc.  Now accepting applications for a TV and film editor.

At the end of the day, I guess, you more or less have someone with the right intention(s) but wrong delivery.  The lesser ‘sophisticated’, bitter, and entertaining Anthony Bourdain, perhaps.  What say you?

Andrew Zimmern, hokey.

I wonder how his producers approach their would-be host cooks…”listen, we’re filming a tv show in which our host eats the most horrible sounding, ridiculous and repulsive food there is…you got any of that lying around in your dirty third world country? who am I kidding, of course you do, you’re poor! what’s that? no no…it’s not fear factor… this guy actually LIKES eating penis! I know, right?! pretty crazy, huh? So, whatdya say? you in or are you in!?”

I used to watch “Bizarre Foods” regularly and found Andrew to be very endearing. He’s opened my eyes and palette to a lot of new thing. With that said I find some of his offerings a bit over the top, i.e. testicles and penis overflow. I also find his touristy attire embarrassing. Anthony Bourdain took me some time to warm up to but in that time “No Reservations” has become “must see TV”.

Anthony is the kind of guy I can imagine sharing a beer and a dirty joke with.

I think Andrew does a very good job of showing us culture through food.
I enjoy the show and am always looking to see what foods make him GAG !!

Ironic that the food he hates most is Spam.
